TATTOO TALK THURSDAYS: TATTOO Q+A!
All About My Face Tattoos!
Hey, guys, so I know when I first started this blog, I talked a little bit about my face tattoos, but I’d like to expand on it, as I added onto my face ink recently. I’m going to start with my latest and work my way backwards. I know the questions I’m going to get. ‚Did it hurt?‘ „How could you do that to your face?!“ „How do you take care of a face tattoo?“ Relax, we’ll cover all of that and more in here.
I love all things Tibetan. The history, the culture, the mysteries. Everything. I knew that I wanted a Tibetan tattoo, I just wasn’t sure what or where. I’d been searching for about 8 months before I found just what I wanted. I could get it above my eyebrow. It would be in a place where I could always see it and it would be unique.
COMMON QUESTIONS
1. Does it hurt?
For me, no not really. I felt the needle’s vibrations in my skull and my eye watered a little bit, but nothing actually painful. I had to keep my head perfectly still and balanced on my arm as well as focus my breathing to be slow and even. After getting my third face tattoo, the one that's closer to my hairline, I had a bit of a headache. It wasn’t painful, just a reaction to being tattooed there. It went away in about two hours or less. It’s totally normal, especially for that position of the tattoo.
2. How did you get a face tattoo? I thought artists don’t do them!
Well, obviously, there are tattooists who do facial tattoos. Most of the time artists will not do facial tattoos unless they know the person. The three people that have done my face tattoos I’ve all known personally and were not worried that it would impact my employment. One of them I’ve known for 7 years, the other 5 years and the first one, a few months, but by the time I met him I already had two facial tattoos already.
3. Are you worried that your facial tattoos will impact your employment opportunities?
Before I would have said yes, but now I don’t think so. In the line of work that I’m currently in, it really doesn’t matter and my fringe covers my facial ink. People tend to see facial piercings and tattoos as something aggressive, negative or that you have no self-respect, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Each person I know that has a face tattoo or multiple ones are all loving, hard-working individuals and a few of them are parents! And should my career change, I’ve already looked into other options that would allow me to be as heavily modified as I am and would not impact my chances of being hired. It’s hard to weigh these kinds of decisions sometimes, but in the end, I knew I just had to do it. And I can always cover them with make-up if I needed or wanted to!
4. Why did you decide on facial tattoos?
I love the way they look. Not all of them obviously! I love ones that are nicely done and add beauty to the person’s face. And I wanted to do something more extreme. I’d gotten behind my ears done, I’d had my hands done for ages and my feet. I’ve got a large portion of my stomach, ribs and chest done as well as almost two complete arm and leg sleeves. I wanted to try something more, push the limits and express myself in different ways. I got my throat piece the same day as I got my Deutschland D with the stars for the European Union (my other home) and the four stars on the other side of my face. I added on two more stars to make a total of 6. And the stars are not a reference to Kat Von D, though she is ace. These are simply the stars from Harry Potter. I fell in love with the series on the first book-the line that sticks out most is when Dedalus Diggle sent shooting stars pouring all over Kent after Voldemort’s first defeat. Childhood.
5. Are healing face tattoos difficult?
No, not really. As with each time you get a tattoo, you want to wash it gently with antibacterial soap and let it air dry. (You can also pat it dry with a clean towel, but I prefer to air dry.) Then once it's dry apply a thin layer of a non-scented lotion or you can use a tattoo healing lotion. For my first facial tattoos, I used a non-scented Nivea to heal them. I only lotioned them once a day because facial skin can get oily and it was summer. You don’t want to over lotion any tattoo, especially a facial one because you don’t want spots near your new tattoo. This time round, I’m trying out the green Tattoo Goo-the one that comes in a little tin. Once it’s all healed up I’ll do another blog just on it and the differences between the two methods I’ve used. You also want to avoid the area with any type of acne cleanser, make-up remover or facial scrubs, peels etc. If you want or must use any of those products, leave an area of skin between the product and the tattoo. You also really don’t want to apply makeup over the fresh tattoo. It can potentially damage the tattoo and or lengthen the healing process.
6. What do you think they’ll look like when you’re old?
I honestly could care less. There’s no guarantee I’ll be old; I could die tomorrow or in the next hour. Might as well do what you want and fuck the consequences. Everyone dies, might as well do it on your own terms. I haven't even thought about what it will look like honestly. All of that is irrelevant to me.
Is this the end of my face ink? I don’t know! But for now, I don’t have any plans to add onto my face ink. My tattoos are a way to define me, but they are not all that I am.
TATTOO Q&A!
1. Would you ever get a white ink tattoo?
No, I don’t think so. I love the boldness and contrast of the black or vivid colour against my paleness. Also, most white tattoos tend to yellow over time. I do have white in some of my tattoos.
When I got my Zero tattoo, I had Coleman add in some blue to make the white stand out more and to keep it from getting a yellowish tint to it!
2. Do you regret the blackwork you have on your hand? Would you get any more blackwork?
Nope! Actually, it’s one of my favourite pieces. I know it was a cover-up of a date and the word „trust“ that I had on my knuckles, but I just love the look of it. It’s not all that common, but it’s deffo becoming more of a trend! And yes, I’ve been thinking about getting more blackwork! It would be a cover-up, as well, but for a different reason. It’s not that I don’t like the tattoo anymore or I no longer like Soul Eater, but I want to cap off the top of my upper arm sleeve with planets and a champagne supernova, keeping the whole thing space related. I think a black band around the base of it would be a cool contrast!
3. Are there any tattoos that you wish you didn’t have?
Yes. There is one way up on my upper back, right below my heart alien on the back of my neck that I absolutely hate. The word was supposed to create an arch below the alien.
4. What countries have you been tattooed in?
I’ve been tattooed in Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Poland, New Zealand, Northern Ireland United States
5. Are there any tattoos you’re thinking of covering up?
Yes. Mostly the one on the base of my throat. I’m thinking of just covering it
up with some back roses and then going on to do a fox on the side of my
neck with an autumn twist to it and then the bunnies from Peter Rabbit on
my neck in a type of watercolour style. Maybe even net-traditional. I’m not
sure yet. I’ve got plenty of time to decide on that.
5. Have you ever used numbing gel/cream on any of your tattoos?
Nope. I’ve never used it. I feel the pain of the tattoo is a necessary part
of the process. It reminds you what you endure to achieve your ideals
of beauty or for the person/memory that you are getting the tattoo for.
If you want to get a tattoo just because you think it looks cool, go for it. Everyone
has different reasons for why they get inked!
6. What is your tattoo goal?
I hope to fully have a body suit by the time I’m 30 and that’s only 5 short years away.
I’ve got a lot to get done and add to before then!
7. What do you think about palm tattoos?
I think they can be beautiful if they’re done correctly and by the right artist.
So many people have they blur or fall out because they didn’t go to someone
who really knows palm tattoos. I know one that does amazing work, Mark, out of Liverpool
who also happened to do model/ YouTuber Monami Frost’s palm tattoos. His link will be down below.
Why do get tattooed?
Tattoos are my identity. It’s something I’ve build that’s beyond my anatomy and my mind. It’s a part of my identity that I can openly control. It’s an expression of self and devotion. It’s memories, joys, deep sorrows, strength, encouragement, reminders of where I’ve been and what I’ve seen. They are not just my own scrapbook, they are almost the sum total of who and what I am as a human.
I'll be doing a piercing Q+A hopefully sometime soon, but after the holidays.
