Dan the Doodlebug: Bill & Tom Kaulitz (Tokio Hotel) Edition! ✏️✏️✏️✏️
Hello and welcome back to another episode of Dan the Doodlebug.
Today, the focus is on a half of the German pop-rock band, Tokio Hotel.
I used to be such a big fan of the band, then things went south, but that's a story for another time. I still listen to their music from time to time, but the passion is gone. I was looking through an old gig stick of mine and I found a tonne of fan art and portrait work I'd done, mainly of Bill Kaulitz, and I decided it would be great for a Dan the Doodlebug.
Here's a few of the portraits I did of Bill and his twin brother, Tom.
The frame took so long to complete for this piece! The flower work alone took almost 2 hours! I started the rough outline of the frame I was going to use and then build the roses and cherry blossoms around the filigree of the frame. I'm a sucker for all things ornate. There's just a certain beauty and class about it. It really draws your eyes in and bathes you in elegance. I took the image of Bill that was a still from Germany's Next Top Model 2012, since I loved the sparkle in his eyes and the complexity of his slicked hair and studded collar on his jacket. The portrait took about 2 hours as well to complete, since it's a small one. Usually my portraits are bigger, but I dunno, I wanted a bit more of a challenge.
Again, I wanted to capture the portraits encased in flowers. I don't know what my floral obsession is. They just always make a portrait piece look good. More complete. More fulfilling. More thicc... (For my latest thick jokes check out the most recent Delectables with Dan episode.) Rather than draw Tom with his brother Bill, I opted for his best mate, Georg. He's the band's bassist and an all around nice guy. He was super nice when I met him both times. Always a laugh. There's a long running joke in the fandom of Tokio Hotel that Georg and Tom are lovers of some sort and they've embraced this with their bromance. ((They both have girlfriends and aren't together.)) They'd posted a selfie which I thought was lovely and playing on the Torg (their shipname) joke, I drew them in a heart shaped frame.
Kings of Suburbia Kaulitz Mashup
I was in Chicago, December 2015 and had some downtime so I started sketching.
This was the first mashup I did, if I remember correctly.
I wanted to capture the feel of their latest album and attempt a double portrait at the
same time. There wasn't really much to work with in the way of album art so I settled on using the lettering font from the album in the piece. I topped off the half Bill, half Tom portrait with a crown to emphasis the theme of the album. Doing the small dotwork and light shading of Bill's facial hair was a challenge; I wanted to capture the texture and the feel of his stubble.

Bill & Tom Kaulitz Mashup with names in Kanji.
Kanji is beautiful, so I wanted to bring it into the piece I was working on. I double checked (I still might be wrong) the translations for their names. If I'm wrong, do let me know so I can make notes for other pieces. I wanted to do something serene, simple and clean. Not the usual ornate things that I usually do, but still capture the bond between brothers.
And some fucking cunt on Instagram wanted to take credit for this piece. She photoshopped the two photos together and wanted credit for my drawing because I drew it off the image. Um, what? Drawing takes talent, which she obviously lacks or she wouldn't be photoshopping anything and claiming its art. It's not. End of fucking debate. It can be cool, interesting and eye-catching but mashing two photos together ain't art. All these years later it still bothers me. Thirsty much, bitch?
In the end I claimed all the credit for it since I spent 4 hours sketching it out. I don't deny I was inspired by the photoshopped picture, but let's get real.
I started this Christmas of 2015 whilst on holiday in Denver, Colorado. Still to this day it remains unfinished and it lost somewhere in a folder of unfinished artwork and portraits. This was taken from a photoshoot the twins did in 2013 to go with a DSDS Interview. (Deutschland sucht dem Superstar: Which is a good show, its like X-Factor, America's Got Talent, etc. There's honestly too many of these fuckin things these days and most of the time the 'talent' they've got on there is enough to make you sick up in your burrito.)
And that ends the latest Dan the Doodlebug installment.
I'm thinking of doing another Dan Howell (danisnotonfire) series as that was really popular. I've got a few sketches of him in the works, so we'll see. If you want to see more of that let me know via my social media links below.
I'm doing tonnes of other artwork for upcoming Delectables with Dan so keep your eyes out for updates and sneak peeks via Instagram!
