TATTOO TALK THURSDAY: My Pooh Bear Got Infected!
Hey Guys!
As you know, a few weeks ago in Montreal, I got the cutest little Pooh Bear tattoo! The tattoo experience itself as great. I didn't really think anything of it. I did everything that I usually do when I remove the bandage. Wash it with antibacterial soap, let it air dry and then apply a thin layer of Nivea. (Nivea has become my favourite for both fresh and older tattoos.) I left to go home the next day and it was normal. Still a bit of irritation; the pink, I've found can be normal with some tattoos. I was hoping it was just irritation from me sitting cross-legged (that's pretty much how I always sit on the bed or on the floor.) I really don't know what's gone wrong. I've never had this happen before.
It's thick and crusty around the border of the tattoo. Some parts of the tattoo have a funny colour to the scabbing but the left side has been hit the hardest. The crust is hard and the surrounding area is red. The white outline of the tattoo is a strange yellow colour that shouldn't be there. I know that whites tend to yellow over time, but they shouldn't be like this at all. I don't want to go to the doctor; I'm kind of ashamed to. Let's try to treat this at home. (Don't do this, this isn't the brightest idea and its risky behaviour.) There's no real pus leaking out but it's hot and it hurts. I take a clean razor blade and remove the hard yellowish crust. I know in doing this I could have damaged the tattoo, but I'd rather have it retouched than have an infection run wild. With a steady hand, I remove it all and there's no damage to the tattoo. As soon as I've finished I was the tattoo with a hospital-grade anti-bacterial soap and pat it dry with a fresh towel. I want the tattoo to get some air, I don't want to bandage it. After I'm satisfied with it, I apply a thin layer of Nivea and put on clean joggers so that the tattoo is covered, but still able to breathe.
The tattoo feels really lumpy and raised as well. It's mainly in the area where he went in with the white. It can't be a reaction to it. No, this is an infection. I keep the tattoo clean, using the anti-bacterial and making sure any of the thick crust is removed with a clean razor blade. It starts to clear up after a day or two. I sigh with relief. It looks like I won't need to go to the doctor after all. I know I won't be out of the woods just yet. There's a little bit of scabbing and there's still redness but most of the crusting has gone away. The rest of the tattoo looks miles better. After about a week and a half, the tattoo is crust free, scab free and looks really good. I don't know what I would have done if I needed to get it redone or the infection got worse. I'm really at a loss for what happened. The shop was clean and I know how to handle tattoos. (I fucking well should by now, right?) I'm so happy that it all worked out pretty good. I might want a tough up to the white at some point to make it really pop, like white with a light blue to make it look brighter. Dunno really.
And I'm already thinking about my next tattoo....More to Come
