Delectables with Dan: Vegan S'mores with Chauo Chocolate!
It’s that time of year again. S’mores season. I’m not a really sweet guy (in terms of flavour, in other ways I’m sweet as can be) but this summer I was really feeling the calling to make some. I wasn’t vegan last year when I made them so I used milk chocolate. This year I’m going to be whipping up some new vegan ones using Chuao chocolate! Since it’s the 4th of July and I’m in America, I got their dark chocolate with the popping candy that just happens to be vegan! We’re going to be celebrating with a bang! (Ignore that cheap pun.) Also I know the blog is a little late for the 4th, but I had some things going on, so I didn't really get round to it until now.
You will need:
Dandies Marshmallows (or other vegan types, link to purchase/ find a location to purchase is linked below)
1-2 bars Chuao chocolate bars, firecracker flavour
Graham Crackers without Honey (these ones have cinnamon; they’ve been my favourite ever since I was a child and my nan gave me the first one.) Any brand will do, I think these are just like a Walmart brand.
I was going to have a nice little open fire and stuff in the back garden but eh, effort. I’m too tired, so we’re going to use the microwave. What a wonderful invention this thing is. And my lazy ass has one right in my bedroom. See? Modern living, am I right?
I didn't read the packaging of the chocolate carefully enough. When I read that it said "firecracker" I assumed that it had bits of popping candy inside. Wrong. It had bits of chipotle inside. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just something I didn't expect. I broke off a small piece of chocolate, popped marshmallow on top and popped that sucker into the microwave for 30 seconds. When I pulled the door open it was completely melted. What?? It was always 30 seconds for the other kind of marshmallow. Lesson learned. But here's the real moment of truth. What does it taste like? Is it going to be good despite its melted state? One part of the marshmallow is almost hard, but I don't care about that. I press a graham cracker onto the mushy mess and take a bit. It's a tsunami of flavour. The chocolate and chipotle mingles with the vanilla of the marshmallow and finishes with the crunch of the graham cracker. I can't really taste the cracker part, it's really just a delivery method for what we're all really here for. I like it. I still want something a bit more traditional so maybe next time I'll use normal vegan chocolate and roast up one of the marshmallows. There's still plenty of summer left!
