VeggieReviews: Doughnats
It took a little bit of googling, but I found a place for amazing vegan doughnuts! I wanted a little something other than the usual, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry. I love the crazy themed doughnuts that I see all over the Internet and I wondered if there was a place in Montreal that did that. I looked through a few and noticed Doughnats. I checked out their website and-they had a cookie dough filled doughnut and a crip-chocolate one. I was sold. You can check out their flavours below. They also deliver and cater to the Montreal area! On the FAQ page, there are instructions on delivery, order requirements for delivery and on. They're not a full vegan shop, they just have a vegan selection, but they are 100% peanut free! For other information on other nut allergies and gluten, please refer to their FAQ page.
I didn't expect the doughnuts to be so small! They're kind of expensive for the size that you're getting, vegan or not. That being said, I really wanted to try them. I wish they'd posted information on pricing on their website on ordering. When I got there, I just wanted one or two doughnuts, but I was told that I needed to order a half dozen or a dozen, that's the only that they do it. That didn't really sit well with me. The only pricing listed is the online order form and that's their dozen build a box. I didn't expect that to happen in the shop. I was like okay, get 3 vegan and share and then 3 non-vegan for my non-vegan mate. Nope. They won't do that either. They told me they don't mix the two. I'm asking for it. Now I have to eat more doughnuts than I really can? Or have to buy more than I want? I was tempted to hit the woman behind the counter out of pure frustration. This was a shakedown in the form of doughnuts. Iced Extortion if you will. I asked if my non-vegan friend was down for trying them so I could at least try something that I came all the way for. She was okay with it so I ordered one of every vegan one so we could try them all.
We waited with our iced coffees, they have these brilliant bottled coffees done with almond milk and looked around the shop. They also offer cookie dough which is vegan and little baggies of a sweet popcorn. That I didn't check out because I'm not a sweet popcorn guy. I'm all about salty corn. It took a few minutes to have them make up the box since they were coming out fresh; now that I love. If I'm going to go in and drop some mega money, I'd expect things to be fresh.
They were amazing. Soft, Sweet and without the heaviness that some doughnuts get. I had the chocolate chip cookie dough, taste of the matcha one, brownie topped one and the chip topped one. Sharing made it an enjoyable experience really. What I liked most is that while the flavours are sweet, you get a real taste of chocolate and the hint of the salt from the crisps; it's not just overpowering sweet blah with no real taste. You know what I mean? Some doughnuts are like that and you really wonder what's the point? It's like you don't even know what flavour it is anymore, it's just sweet. Not with these little beauties. I think they should actually make larger versions of them! Like for a trial thing or something, because they are really out of this world. The cookie dough one reminded me of the Bobble & Squeak cupcake that I did earlier this year, a yellow cupcake filled with non-baked cookie dough. You can view the blog on here by simply searching "bobble & squeak". The doughnuts had the right about of squish too them. That's what I look for when I get a doughnut. Needs to have the right amount of squish and chew. Like Puffnstuff's cheeks. **Le Squish** The brownie one was a right splash of chocolate right in the face. I loved it. Normally, I'm not that big a chocolate guy, but there were two different chocolate flavours and types that blended nicely.

I don't know if I will be back to the shop based on the price and not being able to order a smaller amount, but if things change and I'm having a vegan get together, then I will order from this place. There's great quality and obvious passion from the owner in the shop. I love supporting local businesses, especially when they're creative like this and push the boundaries of the norm, experimenting. My trip here has inspired me to work on some of my new vegan creations and the ideas that I have for the bakery I want to do. Exploring all of these different kinds of eateries and shops, I've learned so much about what's good and what's bad. I'm no Gordon Ramsay when it comes to running a bakery or restaurant, but I'm open to learning and growing my knowledge. I know that I don't know everything there is to know and there are some things that need to be done via trial and error.
