Delectables with Dan: Dan & Phil May Monochrome Cake!

And Delectables with Dan is back for the 5th month in a row for the popular running series featuring cakes inspired by the 2018 Dan and Phil Calendar. The year's not even half over and I've already had one or two questions if I'll continue the series next year. That really depends on if they do another calendar or not. I like the idea of getting to create with guidelines, but I do want to branch out eventually from it. I'll let you guys know what I decide to do as the year draws to a close, probably in like 5 months or so I'll be giving updates on that and releasing some of the ideas and plans for Delectables with Dan in 2019.  For now, let's get on to what you all came here to see today.

DAN & PHIL MONOCHROME CAKE!
This was a cute little fun challenge for me to do. I've never done a monochrome cake before. I went back and forth with so many ideas before settling on this vanilla-chocolate swirl cake. We've got two different flavours of icing as well. It's a cute, fun little cage with my signature icing bursts along the top in white and grey.

First, let's start with the cake.
1 box white cake mix-prepare as box instructs before adding 1 drop of black food colouring.
1/4 of a chocolate cake mix prepared as box instructs. (Reduce the recipe and add 1.5 drops black food colouring to give it a darker appearance.)

Since this is a mini-cake, you're going to need mini cake pans. If you're doing a regular sized cake, it will be two layers instead of four. Grease the pans well before pouring the prepared grey cake batter into the pan. Pout the chocolate cake batter into an icing bag and pipe (this will be very difficult) a swirl in the centre of the batter.

I was going for a lighter grey but then I realised if it was a lighter batter it couldn't bake up into the same grey colour as the calendar that I needed and desired. Then it hits me what colour the batter looks like as I start ladling the batter into the pan. Pigeon grey. ((Now I'm reminded of that completely fucking moronic Pigeon fest that went down on April Fools Day/Easter. Don't even get me started on that.)

Put into bake for 20-25 minutes depending on your oven at 174C (350F). Make sure that cakes are fully baked when you remove them. Allow them to sit for roughly 10 minutes before carefully removing them from the cake pans so that they can cool. Wait until all cakes are fully cool before attempting to ice them. (When you put the second round of cakes in to bake, make sure that you grease the pans before ladling in the next amount of batter.

Chocolate icing is dark, but we want it a little darker, we want it black. I didn't make the chocolate icing this time, I used a store-bought, but if you so desire you can make your own chocolate icing, just add 2-3 drops of black food colouring as you make it, do the same with store-bought icing. Mix well, making sure that it's evenly blended.

With the vanilla icing add half a drop of the black food colouring. We want a nice-god help me-pigeon grey colour icing. Leave some of the vanilla to the side for the top decorating. Once you've blended your icings, it's time to start! If possible, have two icing spatulas, but if you only have one, make sure that you wipe it clean after icing each layer.

You're going to need to make sure that your cakes are level before you start icing. Using your cake circumciser or lake leveller if you want to be professional here, ensure that your cakes are level. The first layer of icing will be chocolate! Spread it out in an even layer over the surface of the cake. Place your second cake and ice with the vanilla layer. Continue in the same order.

The outer icing layer will be the monochrome grey. Carefully and smoothly ice the outer part of the cake with the grey icing. I'm actually liking the colours here...I'm thinking I might want to experiment with these colours with other projects. Maybe make a nice alcohol infused black icing for next month's special. Keep an eye out for that gem.

Taking an icing tool and a star tip, ice small stars around the top of the cake.
And there we have it! A cute little monochrome cake for the colour scheme of the month of May!
