Smoothies & Depression
It's no secret that I've been really struggling with my depression the past few months and as you know sometimes when you're depressed you don't really want to eat. Or you don't want to put effort into eating so you grab fast shit that's the worst thing for you. It's hard to keep any focus on what you're eating or even how much sometimes. There are times when I can't even get out of bed because I don't want to face the day, let alone a meal. I've found myself slipping back into my horrible eating habits of binging, purging or not eating at all. I don't want to have to go through that again. It only adds to the negative feelings I have toward myself and further lowers my self-esteem. I was looking for something I could do that was quick, tasty and would help get all the things I need in me to help heal the cuts and bruises I've inflicted upon myself. Actually, I don't recall it ever being this bad. Maybe once before 5 years ago or so, but the self-harming has reached a critical stage. Even if I wasn't self-harming like this I need to eat things that will make me healthy, not only hinder things for me, so I came up with a few great little smoothies that I've been drinking that are tasty and healthy.
Strawberry-Cherry
Sometimes you just need a pinch of something sweet to kick you out of a slump. Sometimes when I'm sad I'll crave something sweet and a strawberry-cherry smoothie is a perfect fix. Sometimes buying fresh fruit can get expensive, but if you buy the frozen fruit with no sugar added and no syrups, just all natural fruit (organic is great if you can get it). To make this you'll need: 250 ml unsweetened almond milk, 5 stemmed strawberries and 4 stemmed cherries. Add the milk and diced fruits into the blender. Blend until all fruit is pureed.
Berry-Spinach Blend
This smoothie isn't as sweet as the first one, but it's packed with tonnes of antioxidants, vitamins and nutrition that gives you everything you need in one convenient place. As we go along, you'll see what a fan of the almond milk I am. If you don't care for it, you can simply use any milk or milk substitute that you prefer. To make this you'll need: 8 raspberries, 4 stemmed strawberries, 2 tsp of chia seeds (preferably the powder, it blends so much easier) 30g raw spinach, 250ml unsweetened almond milk. Add into blender in any way desired and blend until fruit and veg are pureed. Due to the chia seeds, the smoothie will have a greyish colour to it.
Carrot-Strawberry
This is a great one with just carrots and strawberries. Dice up the carrots and strawberries (stem the berries first) You can use a food processor for this one if you decide, it's sometimes easier than using a blender. You're going to use two carrots and 6 strawberries. If you wish to double this and make a larger smoothie, simply multiply the number of carrots and berries used.
Raspberry-Carrot-Spinach Blend
I'm not a fan of carrot juice but with the raspberries, it's actually pretty damn good. To make this, you'll need two carrots, 20 raspberries and 30g raw spinach. Sometimes with this, I like to add a packet of stevia or Splenda to boost up a bit of a sweet flavour. Pop into the blender and puree.
Apple-Raspberry
For this one I'd 250ml almond milk, 1-2 tsp chia seeds, depending on your preference, 20-22 red raspberries and 1 1/2 have diced up green apple without skin. (You can have the skin on it if you wish.) Make sure that the apples are diced before putting them in the blender, that way everything goes down smoothly.
I'm going to be working on a few other ones that I can share with you guys. They're little healthy things that take little or no effort to do. For me when I'm in a better mood, I like to dice up the fruit and put it in storage containers in the fridge so that I can just grab and make when I'm in one of these slumps.
I'm sorry things are progressing so slowly. I feel so burned out and I could use all the help I can get right now. If you have a smoothie recipe of your own that you'd like to share send me it! You can DM me on Twitter or email me at: daninterviews@gmail.com
Tomorrow a new literature interview will be up so stay tuned for that fun!
