Delectables with Dan: Dan Howell inspired Pastel Cake!
Today on Delectables with Dan we're going pastel.
Yep. You heard it right. We're going pale and soft.
Today's blog is inspired by Dan's outfit from the behind the scenes of the Dan & Phil 2018 calendar shoot. If you want to get your hands on one of them or find out who the fuck they are, the links to their YouTube channels will be linked below.
We're going to go through making the cake and the icing, breaking the ingredients and how to sections into two different parts because there's a lot to go through for this. Yes, to save time I used a cake mix, but you can use pretty much any vanilla/golden cake recipe for this. It doesn't matter.

WHAT YOU DO
Prepare your cake batter as you normally would using an electric mixer to ensure there are no lumps and that batter has no flour/mix bubbles. Add in as many sprinkles as you desire and hand stir into the batter.
The next step is almost as complicated as a high colonic and almost as enjoyable...unless you're really into anal play then you might really enjoy this step..I'm not here to judge. You're going to separate your cake batter out into four different colours in smaller bowls and add your food colourings. Colours should be light pastel in tone. You're going to want a pink, blue, violet and green. Once you've evenly mixed all the colouring into your batter, it's time to pour them into a cake pan. Either with icing bags or set of pouring skills that would make a cement mixer jealous, evenly fill the cake pans with batter, rotating the colours or creating a nice colour swirl. I just randomly put the different colours down. It kind of looked like a Jackson Pollock...Anyway, put your pastel art into bake at 180C (350F) for 20-22 minutes or until is done.

While they're baking up, we can get to work making the icing...that sounds a lot less dirty than I wanted it to. Do note that you are going to need to circumcise your cake. You can do so with a simple serrated knife or a cake leveller. It's kind of like a guillotine or a trip wire for cakes! It's a wonder what baking equipment they have these days. We're going to make a standard buttercream icing for this one. I was going to make an Italian buttercream, but motherfucker I opened the baking cupboard to find that I'm out of cream of tarter which you need for it. Oh, well, maybe next time.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
226g of butter (softened)
2 tsp of vanilla essence (clear)
60ml milk
625g icing sugar
Food Colouring
**I doubled the recipe so I could ice everything and I had a little bit left over.
In a large bowl, combined 1/3 of your icing sugar with your butter and beat together. Add in another portion of your icing sugar and your vanilla essence. It's okay if you don't have the clear vanilla essence you can use the brown one, the clear one just makes the icing a little more white; not that I'm being racist here with this, it just looks better. more neat and clean...Pure like the fallen snow. Each year I look forward to the snow until I have to go and help someone shovel it. "Hey Dan, wanna come over and clear my walk?" "If that's a euphemism for eating you out, hell yes, if it's manual labour, hell no!" Sorry, there won't be any eating out in this blog unless you want to use your leftover icing for a little bit of fun later on...I hope the food colouring won't stain the light coloured sheets I have on the bed right now. Fuck! I'm getting distracted again! Back to the icing making...I was making icing in more ways than one just there...Oops, I did it again. Right-o, after you've added your section portion of icing sugar and vanilla essence blend together. Scrape down the bowl before adding the last portion of your icing sugar and milk. If you'd like it to be a little bit thicker (you all know how I dig the thicc) you can add a tiny bit more icing sugar. Careful, not too much now!
While Chubb's licks my beaters *winks* I'm going to add the food colouring to the icing. We're going to do pastel pink, blue and purple for the outside of the cake. Be sure not to colour all of the icing. You want to save enough of the white for the centre of the cakes, the top and the sides. Once you have the colours added and blended well, apply a decent amount of icing to the top of the first cake. Set the second cake on top of the first cake and press gently so they stay stuck together. Once you are sure they're together like Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka, you know, the ultimate power couple, apply a thin layer of the white icing around the side of the cake and a decent amount to ice the top of the cake.
Now that you're cake is lubed up, it's showtime. Take your coloured icings one by one and apply dollops to the side of the cake, spacing however you wish. Using an icing spatula, spread and blend the coloured icings together, creating a nice wave of pastel colour. Using the remaining pastel colours, using a star tip go around the top of the cake, leaving pastel coloured star puffs of icing, alternating between pink, lilac and blue, then do one of each in the centre. Top with pastel sprinkles over the icing puffs if desired.

And there we have it! The Daniel Howell pastel inspired cake!
I love the ski outfit because I had the same outfit as a kid back in the day. It was like being hit with nostalgia when I saw him in the outfit and hat. I couldn't stop laughing that I had the same wardrobe the winter of 1997-1999. Let that be a lesson to you folks, 90's fashion doesn't go out of style.
The next Delectables with Dan will be a Kit-Kat cake! I had some leftover candy I was given so I decided what fuck and whipped one up. I think I may have posted a photo on my Instagram but I honestly can't remember. Until next time fellow baker-makers.
