Tattoo Talk Thursdays: Neck Me Bro
The rough sketch for my neck tattoo! The lines are a bit rough and it's not really
exactly neat, but it works; Just really need to clean up some of the lines and fix that
wonky little end of the cloud on the left there, I don't know what the fuck happened with
that. I guess it was just because I was in a rush to get it finished for tomorrow. Normally, I
don't leave things so last minute like this. Well, for tattoos anyway. Some things I leave last
minute and run around going mental.
I know some of you must be asking, "Dan, why are you getting another moon on your neck when you
already have one on your pinkie?" Well first off, fuck you. Second, one can never have too many moons cause they're amazing. And thirdly, I wanted something with a bit more expression that just a little crescent moon online.
I'm a night creature. I love the darkness, the moon, the stars, the planets. Space is beautifully cold and mysterious, just like that woman at the local pub that you keep trying to fuck. Perfect balance. And the best part is a human head will explode in space. You just can't beat that kind of coolness or entertainment. I guess you could say the same for the deep ocean, but deep waters freak me out and I'm scared of a lot of the creepy things that go bump in the deep blue. I wanted something to remind me of the inner peace and safety I find in the night. I wanted to always be reminded of the comfort I find in the night and how soon as the sun goes down I no longer feel the need to hide. I'm safe and nothing can hurt me.
It's a piece that speaks to my great love and also to the one who taught me deep life lessons, who shares my passion for the darkness, the abyss and the internal struggle of humanity. His intellectual beauty is more stunning than his chibby-chubbiness.
LE STENCIL
The guy created the stencil off the artwork that I sent him in advance. I realised that it would need to be flipped to face the way I wanted it to so it was a simple fix before we printed it out. Course it's bigger in this photo than the actual stencil we put on my neck.
I arrived a little early for the appointment but didn't have to wait long, we settled on the size, direction and were set up within about 15 minutes of my arrival. Some artists take forever to set up and some are already set up when I get to the appointments. It always makes me wonder why they're not all prepared except for pouring ink when a customer arrives. Like no the stencil size obviously, but like everything ready to show the customer, pour in and get going. I love when shops run like that.
He got it on my neck in one shot. Sometimes placement on the neck, especially around existing pieces can be a real cunt of a challenge. Soon as it was stuck on it was time to get down to the line work. I got lost in the rhythm of All Time Low as the first line was laid. It was far less painful than the throat. Actually, this tattoo was more of less painful until we got up towards the jaw and down towards the collarbones or as I described to my sister Peaches, "the part where the neck connects".
I love the way the stencil fit the space perfectly and I was just eyeballing when I drew it. I couldn't really trace the area out on my own neck and was working with just looking and some finger measurements when I did the sketch. I love the navy-purple colour of tattoo stencils, It always looks so crisp and clean and contrasts amazingly with my skin tone.
The outlining of the tattoo went really quickly. It took about 30 minutes to outline the piece. I thought he was moving fast and I even said that to him. I couldn't believe he'd completed it almost when I took the photo above. ((Sorry for the shitty angle, I was sitting up for the piece and it was hard to get a good shot as I only had a few moments before he got back into tattooing.)) I was surprised that I was sitting up. I thought I'd be laid out on a body table, which makes far more sense to me. It adds more support to the upper body as the tattooist leans to tattoo you and also allows the space of the neck to "open up" a little more and allow the artist to really stretch the skin and get a clearer view of the area he's working on. I suppose it's the artist's preference, but really?
The shading wasn't that bad to get done, just a kind of scrappy-burn sensation for a few moments in a few small spots. It actually was one of the least painful tattoos I've gotten. The lip prints I, which are trashy and ironic, hurt more than the moon and cloud piece. And so here we have the finished product...
I'm going to be doing a mixture of dry healing and light aftercare with Hustle Butter. I like to try out different healing methods on different tattoos depending on placement, weather, etc.

I'm not being paid to use, try out or promote Hustle Butter, this is simply my reviews on the product and my overall thoughts on the healing process with it.
So far, after the one usage on the neck the skin is soft and doesn't feel like I just had a fresh tattoo done. It smells amazing like some sort of tropical paradise-wonderland of sorts. Hears to a happy outcome with Hustle Butter.

Finished.
It's going to lighten up over time, I know that but right now to me, it looks like a dark, blobby mess. The lines kind of look choppy and not lined thick enough on the clouds. The shading looks rather messy too. What do you guys think? And in a usual Dan fashion, I was too shy to say anything so I just left when the piece was done. I'd put down a £220 deposit but it only cost me £150 and they kept the rest and gave me shop credit...Are you fucking kidding me? Shop credit? Like I'd want to get tattooed again there after this? I took the slip for shop credit, but I don't know what the fuck I'm gonna do with it. The guy behind the counter booked me in for a 3-hour session, we were done in about an hour and I think it kind of shows. I feel the piece was rushed and I'm gonna get up the balls to say something to the shop about it. I'm not gonna take this shit laying down anymore. I deserve to be treated like a fucking human. I feel like once it's healed I'm probably going to have the thing reworked and it's going to cost me more time and money.
I waited 6 months to get my neck finished and then I get this? It feels like a massive let down and disappointment to be completely honest. I think I'm not going to be getting any more tattoos for a bit. Some of the tattoo experiences I've had lately haven't been good ones, despite the artists having great portfolios and "rave" reviews. I think I'm a bit disillusioned over the entire thing. I'm going to review it in a month and see where I stand with the piece.
