DANNY GOES TO WORK: THE BOOK
That's right.
Danny Goes to Work is becoming its very own book.
My adventures as a stockboy have left me with numerous scars and invaluable lessons (as well as reinforcement on why I hate people.) I don't know how much more therapy I'll have to endure to try and get over what's happened in the first month alone, but we'll cross that bridge when we do. In the meantime, I decided to work on something that was therapeutic, a chronical of most of the on-goings during the day at the Goodship Lollipop. Some of my narrations durned out to be humorous and cartoonish in many ways.
It's going to chronicle the ongoings of a department store, the customers & the lack of a better word, management. In the short time, I've spent at the store, I've learned more than I ever wanted to know about lingerie, home dining sets & sporting attire. I'm not going to add the mental sock guy or the psychotic woman upset about her sister's stitches or whatever the fuck that was.
This is Danny.
Danny hates everyone;
but he has to go to work or he will starve to death.
After months of looking, he finds employment...
employment at one of the worst places in Western Civilization.
The book is a realistic look at the soul-crushing aspects of working in retail and the disillusionment the title character feels working such a job. He's unapologetic, uncouth and lacks any social graces. He's less than a model employee, but customers do enjoy his laid-back attitude and humour.
I started writing these little segments as a way to give my mind something to do while completing the mindless tasks that make up my job. It also became a way for me to process a situation that's so different from anything I've known. There are certain aspects of the job, the social ones, that I don't think I'll ever understand. It's just not in me.
I take a look at some of the realities of being in retail based on the volume of sales and the types of things people buy while at the store.
During the time doing this, he's realised that his job is the by-product of people having more money than brains; spending money on items they don't need and to some degree, don't really want.
Then there's those deeply in debt, crippling themselves, piling on more stress by purchasing items they don't need.
The stress will lead to a heart attack or heart failure or just for the added visual bonus, a ruptured ulcer.
He's a serial killer by proxy.
I hope to have most of this book finished by the end of the autumn, but no promises. There's too much going on for me emotionally and work wise with other projects and such. I'm going to be doing all the artwork for this, so that adds to the production time, not to mention the fact that I have to colour it, scan it and size it in addition to editing the text for the book. Keep an eye out for new updates on this project and others.
